The A720 IS and A590 IS have very similar features…so the A590 IS should be perfectly ok, especially if you’re on a budget. It’s high quality movie mode, however is not as good as the A720 IS’s, with a top frame rate of only 20fps. 30fps is the standard.
The A650 IS is a little better than both. However, don’t expect it to have exceptional image quality just because it has 12MP. In fact, it’s the complete opposite, because small cameras with small sensors and lots of MP usually have lots of issues with noise, and the A650 IS is no exception. 12MP is extreme overkill for snapshots…but 12MP does allow for heavy cropping if need be. It also has 6X optical zoom and a higher res. LCD screen than the other two (173,000 pixels v 115,000) which btw is a vari-angle (flip out & twist) LCD screen. This type of screen is very useful at times, expecially when you have the camera mounted on a tripod or if you hold the camera up above your head you can angle the screen down so you can easily see it.
Buying a 2GB SD memory card (for the A650 IS) is a sensible option, which will allow around 360 high quality images (Superfine/Large). Also, don’t forget that shooting high quality movies consumes card space rapidly (almost 2MB per sec.) So, make sure you get a fast and reliable card. I highly recommend the Sandisk Extreme III. Always format a brand new memory card before you use it and everytime you need to delete all images from it in one go.
The A650 IS uses 4 AA batteries. For cost effectiveness and long battery life, you will need to buy rechargeable NiMH (2700mAh) + charger. These type of batteries will allow more than 500 shots per full charge (or up to 1400 if using only the viewfinder).
But, either the A720 IS (if you can find it) or the A590 IS (except it’s movie mode) makes a very good choice and you shouldn’t discount them. Each uses 2 AA batteries. Rechargeable NiMH (2500mAh) will allow around 450 shots (A590 IS) or 400 shots (A720 IS).
